Smina Siggiewi 72 – Kia Qormi 61
(20-19, 21-14, 17-15, 14-18)
Qormi kellhom debutt inkorraganti fejn minkejja t-telfa, huma wrew entusjazmu konsistenti u rnexxielhom jtellghu puntegg tajjeb kontra avversarji superjuri.
Fil-fatt Qormi kein qed jaghmlu l-ewwel dehra taghhom ufficjali dan l-istagun wara li telghu jikkompetu fl-oghla livell. Ghalihom kien hemm ukoll id-debutt tal-koppja Jean Paul Azzopardi (ex-Depiro) u Roberto Formosa (ex-SN Suns).
Minn naha l-ohra, Siggiewi kienu gejjin minn rebha fl-ahhar hinijiet kontra r-rivali Sliema. Ic-centre Albert Spiteri kien nieqes ghax imwegga waqt li ghamlu l-ewwel dehra stagjonali l-koppja Steve Sammut u Eman xuereb.
Tliet 3-pointers minn Peter shou;ts ghenu lil Siggiewi jinnewtralizzaw l-entusjazmu nnizzjali ta’ Qormi li minn naha taghhom ukoll kellhom xuttiejiet mid-distanza minn JP Azzopardi u Antoine Grech.
Siggiewi komplew jzidu r-ritmu u f’nofs it-tieni perjodu kienu 32-19 minn fuq wara xuttijiet precizi ta’ Louis Camilleri u z-zaghzugh Matthew Shoults.
Kienu l-freethrows li zammew lil Qormi kemmxejn vicin sa nofs il-loghba ghalkemm xorta kien hemm 13-il punt, 41-28 jifirdu liz-zewg teamijiet wara li l-ahwa Bonnici, Jena Paul u Addison sabu xi baskets mill-vicin ghar-rebbieha.
Qormi fethu it-tieni taqsima b’mod pozittiv hekk kif kisbu run ta’ 10-2 ghal 38-43. Madankollu Siggiewi malajr regghu hadu r-riedni f’idejhom u rregistraw l-akbar break tal-loghba, wiehed ta’ 15-0 b’A. Bonnici u Louis Camilleri l-aktar precizi biex issa kellhom vantagg ta’ ghoxrin punt, 58-38 fuq l-avversarji.

Siggiewi were aiming to gain top spot in their group, and for Qormi it was not only their first outing this season, but also their first game among the top brass in their short history. Siggiewi had an expected win, but they were sorely pressed at times, as Qormi gave their share in the game.
Siggiewi had Albert Spiteri on the stands as a spectator, out for some weeks, with an ankle injury. Qormi had JP Azzopardi and Roberto Formosa as their new signings. Siggiewi started off with a couple of treys, but Qormi were not sitting back, and Antoine Grech opened up their account, also with a trey. Siggiewi kept on sinking their treys, with Peter Shoults steady from the distance, but Azzopardi, also noted for his long-distance shots, had his share for Qormi, and they were not far behind after the first session.
In the second quarter Siggiewi put in their subs, but still went on increasing their lead, as David Camilleri found time to sink his trey. Then it was Matthew Shoults' turn, as Siggiewi went on a 32-19 lead. Qormi, with a number of free throws, reduced their deficit. Siggiewi soon had their double-figure lead back again, and at the interval it was a 41-28 match.
After the break Siggiewi were caught cold as Qormi put on pressure, and Siggiewi were still going on with their player rotation. A 10-2 run brought Qormi close enough, at five points down. Siggiewi then turned on the heat, and some intense pressing and fast breaks enabled them to register a sound 15-0 break, snapped by a Nello Xuereb trey. Qormi were now at a distance, and after three sessions it was 58-43.
In the last quarter it was a more balanced game at first. Qormi first prevented Siggiewi from increasing their lead, then, despite Peter Shoults' trey, Qormi went near, at 59-68. Siggiewi still went on with their frequent changes, as Qormi obtained a couple of treys, to make the game more interesting, but Siggiewi were never in danger at the end.

Bupa Luxol 84 – Floriana 51
(17-5, 23-6, 24-11, 20-29)
Luxol accertaw ruhhom mill-ewwel post fi Grupp B meta kisbu t-tieni rebha, li kienet meritata, meta ghelbu lil Floriana, team li kien qieghed jirritorna fl-oghla livell wara nuqqas ta’ xi snin.
Zewg breaks ta’ 9 u 8 punti rispettivament mill-ewwel poggew lil Luxol komdi fil-vantagg fl-ewwel perjodu hekk kif Floriana, minkejja l-entusjazmu nizzjali, bdew isibuha difficli li jinfdu lill-avversarji anke meta kkommettew numru ta’ turnovers.
Matul it-tieni perjodu Luxol komplew ikabbru d-distakk u ghamlu r-rebha certa fejn kellhom lil Dirk Schembri, Marco Mercieca u Chris Sammut l-aktar precizi ghal skor ta’ 40-11 f’nofs il-loghba.
L-andament ma nbidilx fit-tielet perjodu hekk kif Luxol komplew jiddettaw il-loghob u kellhom 3-pointers minn Robert Azzopardi, Mike Portera u Steve Schembri kif ukoll zewg baskets konsekuttivi taz-zaghugh Mark Micallef.
Kien biss fl-ahhar perjodu li Floriana tellghu kemmxejn il-puntegg taghhom fejn il-veteran Don Ross ppottja xejn inqas minn ghoxrin punt, fosthom erba’ xuttijiet mid-distanza l-kbira.
(TMI)
Luxol booked a semi final place in the easiest of fashions, as they trampled Floriana, who were making their first appearance this season, after opting to play in the top division. Obviously they are going to find this new environment a hard mountain to climb, given the harsh realities of life at the top level.
Floriana included several new signings, including Noel Falzon, Brian Portelli, Roderick Mifsud, and veterans Brian Grech and Don Ross. Floriana managed to post the first two hoops of the game, but then, as expected, they had to suffer Luxol's reaction, as the Violets turned on the heat. A 9-0 run was halted by a Roderick Mifsud free shot, but Luxol went on till the end of the session, with another 8-0 run, to establish a good lead.
In the second session Luxol continued where they left off, periodically stopped by a Floriana hoop. Marco Mercieca was in evidence, and Robert Azzopardi sank the game's first trey. Floriana tried as hard as they could, but Luxol didn't leave any breathing space. A session-ending 9-0 run left the Violets on a strong 40-11 score.
After the break Steve Schembri put in a trey for Luxol and, except for Josef Paris free throws, the Greens suffered an adverse 2-16 run, but then had a partial recovery, through Gareth Gilson points. Both sides sank treys at the end, and after three sessions it was a 64-22 game.
In the final quarter Don Ross opened up with a couple of treys for the Greens, but Luxol had a good reply, as Alan Borg, the only pointless Luxol player, was spraying passes and feeding his team mates well, especially Marco Mercieca. With Luxol easing off late in the match Floriana took the opportunity to hike up their score, and Don Ross showed his prowess, and enhanced his personal points tally, ending up as the game's top scorer, as Luxol kept on making their frequent player rotations.

Thefirst time to go into overtime this season, and it was a triple overtime at that. Mellieha now go top of the standings in this competition. Both teams produced endeavour in this marathon match, and Loyola must bemoan the fact that they were always leading in all the overtimes, but then had to succumb to a single point difference.
Mellieha had the better opening, going on to a 7-2 lead, but Loyola recovered well. and till the end of the session they had managed to overturn the score, and lead by a basket. In the next quarter it was Mellieha again, at the start, with a Graham Coleiro double, but Loyola took thye match in hand, and a 10-0 run, aided by Trevor Grech free shota, opened a good lead. This was neutralised by a resurgent Mellieha, who dominated play till the interval, and a 9-0 run gave them a slight, and low, 20-19 advantage.
After the break it was Loyola, through JOnathan Ransley, who went ahead, but Mellieha again produced good form, and an 11-0 run, with an Ian Terribile trey, gave them enough of a lead, to hold on till the end of the third session, leading 33-28.
In the last quarter Loyola relied on their treys, gaining three, and a double from Clayton Agius, and also going 41-37 in front. Mellieha produced enough till the buzzer, to tie the game, on a 43-43 score, and go into overtime,
In the first extra period it was Loyola who were in front, with another Clayton Agius trey, but Mellieha saved the game again, and on a 50-50 score the two sides had to endure another overtime. This second one saw Trevor Grech, with his points, including a trey, give Loyola another advantage. Robert Loporto sank a trey for Mellieha, to keep the game close, as both sides were still going flat out. Joshua Aquilina put in another trey, and Mellieha were just a point down. In the final ten secondsLoporto put in his second trey to push the match into the third session of overtime.
The treys were still pouring in from both sides, as players were finding more space. Once more it was Loyola who went in the lead, with Mellieha always chasing the score. At the end it was a Michael Pisani trey which brought a definite result for Mellieha, handing Loyola their first defeat.

SN Suns Bell Med 62 – Mosta 49
(24-5, 19-11, 12-13, 7-20)
Minkejja li ma kellhomx triq ohra hlief li jinzlu ghall-loghob ezatt b’hames players, SN Suns irnexxielhom jiksbu rebha fuq Mosta, tram li ddizappunta hafna anke jekk kellhom lill-koppja nfluwenzali Ray Muscat/Steve Gouder nieqsa.
L-eroj ta’ SN Suns, specjalment fl-ewwel taqsima kien Hubert Agius li kien f’mument ta’ grazja fix-xuttijiet meta kisser id-difiza avversarja b’sensiela ta’ baskets, inkluz sitt 3-pointers fl-ewwel taqsima, taqsima li fiha huwa ppottja 28 mill-43 punt tat-team tieghu.
Fil-fatt ghadd ta’ punti ta’ l-istess H. Agius u anke zewg baskets minn huh Daniel, ghenu lil Suns jifthu vantagg sostanzjali ta’ 24-5 wara ghaxar minuti loghob.
Ghalkemm ghall-bidu tat-tieni perjodu deher lise jkun hemm xi reazzjoni minn Mosta, Suns gharfu jaghlqu t-taqsima fuq nota pozzitiva u break ta’ 12-0, inkluz punti minn Mark Schembri, poggiethom 43-16 minn fuq.

Kien biss fl-ahhar minuti tal-partita li Mosta resqu aktar qrib l-avversarji b’zewg 3-pointers minn Oliver Sammut u zewg baksets wara xulxin minn Simon Schembri. Madankollu Suns qatt ma dehru fil-periklu li jitilfu l-loghba.
(TMI)
Suns could only muster five players for this match, due to various difficulties regarding the other members of the squad, but they still managed to win this encounter, in a comfortable fashion, helped in no small way by an inept Mosta side, who were not bothered in any defensive play, and made enough mistakes in attack, to give Suns enough space throughout practically the whole match. Suns thus recovered from their single hoop defeat by Loyola, whilst Mosta succumbed to their second defeat.
This game was started off briskly by both sides at first, but then Hubert Agius took over completely for Suns and, left with enough space from the sides, he stunned Mosta with his treys and hoops, as Suns enjoyed a 13-0 run, towards the end of the session.
In the second quarter Mosta seemed to stage a rally, but found Hubert Agius still in an uncompromising mood, and his treys kept on pouring in, six in all. The latter part of the session was all Suns, as they embarked on another 12-0 run. At the interval Mosta were already a sorry loy, as they trailed 16-43, intensely feeling the absence of experienced players, Ray Muscat and Steve Gouder.
After the break the Suns' scoring started to die down, and Mosta managed an 11-4 run, but they didn't keep up the pressure, and Suns were allowed back in the game, although unable to make any substitutions. An 8-2 run pushed Suns' lead forward, in a 55-29 score, to make the issue safe, with a session to go.
In the last quarter Mosta went out to make the score more respectable, and they succeeded, as Suns were penned for long periods in defence. Mosta did manage to get nearer to their opponents, but the gap was too big, and Suns could play on in the safe assumption of a victory.

As has become the habit in these last few seasons, Luxol are winning their first seasonal match against Hibernians. This victory now puts Luxol alone at the top of their group, with two wins. Nadia Mifsud, still abroad, missed her second match for the champions, who were rattled by Luxol's never-say-die spirit. Once more, although we are still at the start of the season, there was a last-gasp finish.
It was a balanced first session, as Luxol, who traditionally always give the Paolites a hard time, exchanged leads with their opponents. The champions went 10-7 ahead at one stage, but careless passing in attack enabled the Violets to go to within a point again.
The second quarter saw Hibs starting to take the upper hand. A 6-2 opening provided some breathing space, but Lara Chetcuti came on court for Luxol, and started to sink in her hoops, helping her side to advance to within a point again. Marylou Cutajar replied for Hibs, and her brace of hoops began a 9-2 run, which went on till the interval, as the Paolites pushed on to a 29-21 advantage.
After the break a Kirsten Micallef trey started Luxol off, but Hibs had a quick reply, and an 8-2 run, ending with a Beverlee Zammit trey, opened up a double figure lead. As the Hibs subs came on court the Violets struck back, and treys by Psaila Savona and Micallef found Hibs struggling to hold on to their advantage. After three sessions it was a close 41-39 match.
In the final session the champions were still on the receiving end, as Luxol overturned the score, and went 46-43 ahead, after three minutes. Hibs did tie the score, but Mandy Sciortino was instrumental in a 7-0 run for Luxol. The champions came back with determination, and Beverlee Zammit excelled in an 11-2 run, including a trey, as they went back in front. Psaila Savona regained the lead. The game was tied with a Doreen Parnis free throw at the end, but in the last two seconds it was Dawn Spiteri who gave Luxol the match with a close range hoop, and Hibs were left stunned at the outcome.

Kerygma forgot the heavy defeat suffered against the champions, as they recorded their first win in their group, against a Wanderers side who inproved on their first outing, against Luxol. Except for a brief opening spell, Sliema were always in arrears, but they tenaciously held on at a distance, and it was only in the last quarter that Kerygma pulled definitively away, to make sure of the match.
A double strike by Sliema at the start was replied to by Kerygma, as they began with a Lara Cauchi trey, and went on an 11-0 run. Sliema tried to reply, but were hit again by another trey, this time by Josette Calleja. In the second session Kerygma found scoring a little bit more difficult. and Sliema were able to prevent them from increasing their lead, and having a reply to every Kerygma hoop. The latter still managed another Calleja trey, and at the halfway stage it was a low 25-14 game.
After the break both sides improved on their shooting. Kerygma extended their advantage with another Lara Cauchi trey, and they went on to a good 36-22 lead. Sliema recovered at the end of the quarter, and with Leanne Sciberras leading the way, and eventually ending up as the game's top scorer, Sliema managed to finish the third session 32-44 behind, though Kerygma looked capable enough to control the situation.
In the final quarter Kerygma opened up well, and a 7-0 run seemed enough, but midway through the session Sliema put in a 9-1 run, to pose some problems. Kerygma picked up the rythym again, ending the match on a bright patch, and improved on their comfortable lead, taking advantage of Slieam's relative inexperience and youth.

Suns were making their first appearance this season, bringing in some new faces, who however were no match to a Depiro side, still smarting over their defeat by Loyola. Coach, Charles Bonnici, found time to include all his players on court, as Depiro strolled through their second group game. In this match there was the return of ex-international referee, Anthony Micallef, as he is now back from abroad, and will give his contribution towards the officiating side of the game this season.
Suns had quite a good opening, replying with a two hoop burst to the initial Depiro basket, as Petra Zammit and Cettina Caruana put Suns in front. Depiro then took over, and scored regularly, as Sarah Pace and Greta Zarb did most of the damage.
In the second quarter Suns found it even more difficult to obtain points, and were only limited to free throws. Depiro, with a fully changed side on court, took time to settle down, then pierced their opponents' defence at will, and at the interval it was a decisive 44-8 score.
After the break Suns were still on the recieving end, but Depiro's scoring rate was slowly abating. A late Cettina Caruana hoop was all Suns could show, as Depiro's advantage kept on increasing, and had grown to a 60-8 score after three sessions.
In the last quarter Suns were still tormented, mainly through Greta Zarb, and she also found space to sink in the only two treys of the match. Depiro could afford to become a little careless in the latter stages of the game, but which they would surely rue, in other more important encounters.
