BOV K.O. Men's 1 Div. Semi Final
Qormi Kia 42 Bupa Luxol 86
(12-20)(10-18)(8-29)(12-19)
Luxol will be Sliema's opponents in the K.O. final, after they disposed of
Qormi, and also recorded their third win over them this season. Luxol took a
while to settle down, but they were already pulling away in the second
quarter. Qormi were rudely jolted in the third session, as the Violets took
almost complete control. Luxol will face Sliema in the second final, after
the Super Cup.
Luxol had Jide Jetson in good form at the start, although Qormi were not
sitting back, as Antoine Grech sank a trey. Luxol twice went back in front,
but Qormi's reply was immediate, and a 7-2 run with a Roberto Formosa trey,
pushed them in front again. Till the end of the session there was a surge by
Luxol, as they ran up a 9-0 break, with Dirk Schembri hoops and a Robert
Azzopardi trey, edging slightly away from Qormi.
In the second quarter Qormi tried a quick rally, but Chris Sammut came off
the bench for Luxol, and an 11-0 run with a closing Sammut trey took the
Violets clear, on a 33-16 score. Qormi stopped the break, and replied to
Luxol's next hoops, through Jason Dalli, as Marco Mercieca put his name in
among the Luxol scorers. At the interval Luxol held a 38-22 advantage.
After the break Qormi were slammed hard, aftermaking the opening basket. An
11-0 Luxol run paved the waym as they then steamrolled to an 18-2 long run,
leaving Qormi to close down the session with a Carlos Bugeja hoop, but
trailing desolately behind, after three sessions. Luxol were leading 67-30.
In the final session it was a quiet affair, with everything already decided.
This open quarter was not so hot on points at first, although there was more
space in the paint. The bench players found their way on court, and into the
scoring sheet, as the emphasis wasn't on a tight defence as the match came
to the end.

Floriana 50 Dakar Sliema 71
(16-18)(7-17)(12-22)(15-14)
Sliema booked their place in the final, awaiting their opponents from the next semi final. They had their expected victory over Floriana which, despite the win, wasn't so clear cut. Everything went well in the end, with Sliema's young players also enjoying some of the play on court. Floriana must be satisfied with their performance, given the opposition. Floriana had Brian Grech back from abroad, whilst Sliema recovered Etienne Bezzina, and Kristin Baldacchino returned from Australia. Tino Riolo is still abroad, Omar Said still had his second match suspension, Duncan Cuschieri only sat on the bench, with a groin injury and Silvio Cassar was missing, due to his father's demise a few days ago.
Sliema went out in their usual style, and after a hoop against they progressed to a 9-2 lead. Floriana stuck to their task, and caught Sliema on the wrong foot several times. They surprisingly went ahead, at 12-11. Sliema reorganised themselves, and finished the session on a good note, and a Kristin baldacchino trey, to forge ahead again.
In the second quarter Sliema were more wary, and after opening with an 8-2 run, they limited Floriana to a single hoop, besides some free shots. On the other hand the Greens were careful in defence, and Sliema had to go all out to increase their lead, with Julian Galea inserting himself well in the side.
At the interval Sliema were 35-23 ahead. After the break Floriana were hit instantly by an 8-0 Sliema run, as the Blues broke clear. Flroiana recovered and matched their opponents for some time. It didn't last long, and a 7-0 run, with an Adrian Micallef trey, pushed Sliema further ahead, and make the game completely safe. After three sessions Floriana had fallen35-57 behind.
In the final quarter both sides sought permutations in their play, and substitutions were frequent. Floriana were that little bit more enterprising, as Sliema opted again for their younger players. Bernardo Riolo played his heart out for Floriana, as they registered a good result, despite the defeat, also making a 9-0 run in the last stages.

(15-24)(13-23)(13-26)(28-18)
Mosta consolidated their second spot in the table, with a deserved win over
hapless Suns, who are finding this level of play not to their liking,
contrary to the last two seasons. Mosta were consistent throughout the
match, steadily drawing away from their opponents, and making sure of the
result midway through the third quarter.
Suns had missing players, such as Michel Curmi and Daniel Agius. It was
Mosta who made the better opening, with a 10-2 run. Suns reacted with a
Robert Camilleri trey, but Mosta came back again, with another 7-2 run, and
then both sides alternated, as treys went in. Anthony Shoults made his for
Suns, as they reduced the arrears, but Reuben Abela sank his second trey for
Mostam as they took a 24-15 lead.
In the second quarter there were a couple of hoops at both ends, before
Mosta embarked on another 10-0 run, for a 38-19 advantage. Suns replied with
another trey, by Michael Barberi. Mosta were combining well, and a 7-0 run,
with Oliver Sammut getting in among the treys. Points at both ends till the
end of the session made the score 47-28 for Mosta at the interval.
After the break Mosta kept up their impressive scoring rate. Suns managed a
decent reply at first, when the score went up to 54-37, but then Mosta took
the upper hand again. Suns could only get in the points edgewise, as Mosta's
lead started growing again. A 12-1 run, finished off with treys by Adrian
Pace and Oliver Sammut, gave Mosta a strong 73-41 lead after three sessions.
In the final quarter Mosta's pressure began to slacken, and Suns were
finging more space. Their points tally rose up, but they weres till at a
distance from their opponents. Mosta picked up again in the latter stages,
and Sammut sank his fourth trey, as his side ambled home.

(9-10)(7-11)(9-7)(13-11)
In a low scoring encounter, Kerygma put paid to Luxol's aspirations of
making the top three positions, and a place in the championship pool.
Kerygma also avenged their two previous defeats at the Violets' hands
earlier on in the season. This was achieved with a minimal single point
victory. The low score kept the two sides together through the whole match.
Kerygma seem to be making it a hibit of beating more quoted sides, and also
keeping their mid-table position in the table.
Kirsten Micallef returned for Luxol, after her sojourn in Australia, whilst
Claire Spiteri was missing for Kerygma.
Luxol went into a quiet 5-2 lead at the start, but Kertgma found their
touch, and went in front. Luxol manage dto overturn the score, with a couple
of hoops from Justine Mangion, but it was Kerygma who finished the session
in the lead, with a Josette Calleja free shot right at the end.
In the second quarter Kerygma fell behiond at first, but then replied with a
7-0 run, and a Calleja trey. Luxol tried hard, but they couldn't get back in
the lead till the end of the session, although they went near. Another
Calleja brace of free throws for Kerygma in the closing stages gave them a
low 21-16 advantage at the interval.
After the break Kerygma kept their noses in front. Luxol couldn't seem to
get going, and their deficit remained constant till midway through the
quarter. A Psaila Savona trey brought the Violets within the distance, but
Kerygma were still in front after three sessions, on a 28-25 score.
In the final session Luxol finally broke through, but they didn't enjoy
their lead for long. Then it was treys at both ends, Psaila Savona for Luxol
and Calleja, with her second for Kerygma. Luxol kept chasing their
opponents, and in the last minute Justine Mangion sank a couple of hoops to
put the Violets ahead. It was not enough, as Annabel Busuttil, not long in
the court, cooly put in the necessary two points from the free throw line,
to keep Kerygma in their fourth spot in the table, with Luxol falling back a
place.

Depiro keep on chasing the champions, having had no difficulty in acquiring their sixth league win in eight matches. It was also their third win over Suns this season, having beaten them in the Shield and in the first part of the league campaign.
Suns continue to display their great hearted approach to the game, despite the uphill task they have to face in every match. Suns fielded a depleted side, with just six players, and they felt the pressure from the Depiro players straight from the start, conceding 11 points before they managed to put in two hoops of their own. depiro had Greta Zarb and Rachel Camilleri missing from the encounter.
The Mtarfa side picked up again till the end of the quarter, to go into a double figure lead. At the start of the second session Nicolette Buhagiar sank a trey for Suns, in a 5-2 opening. Depiro then took complete command for nearly the whole of the session, and ran up a long 14-0 break, as Joselle Cardona was very active under the boards. Suns managed a single other hoop at the end, as Lilian Cremona made her second shot. At the interval Depiro held a 30-11 advantage. After the break Depiro started off as before, with a 10-2 run, but Suns came more into the picture midway through the quarter, and Abigail Camilleri made a three point play.
Depiro didn't have it all their own way, although they continued to add on to their lead, and after three sessions they were 48-19 in front. In the final session Suns were still backpecalling, as Depiro kept on their relentlass forcing. A 7-2 run, with a Sarah Pace trey, served them to try out schemes of play, and give needed practice to their bench players. The Paolites registered their fourth victory over Sliema, in three different competitions. Their unbeaten league record was never in any danger, as they went clear in the furst part of the match. Sliema's Leanne Sciberras boosted her side to a good performance, though the champions always held the upper hand in the scoring.
The Paolites made a careless start, missing most of their shots, and Sliema made the most of the occasion, staying close to their opponenets for most of the session. When it looked like Hibs were going to have a worrying time, up stepped Lucienne Bezzina, who dominated the last minutes, making a total of nine personal points, to hoist her side clear, and give them a much-needed shot in the arm.
Having established a lead, the champions went out in the second session, and started to put in their bench players. They managed to hold their level of play for some time, and a 12-2 opening run showed their command of the match. Sliema then played their part, and Leanne Sciberras sank a last second possession trey. The Paolites' scoring rate went down, and it was Sliema with a good ending to the quarter.
At the interval it was a 31-15 game. After the break the champions were still somewhat hesitant, and Sliema shared the match with their opponents for a time. It was Alexis Darmanin, who recovered her scoring touch, and galvanised Hibs to a 9-0 run, with most of her points.
This was stopped by Sciberras' points, and the two teams were not so prolific till the end of the session, as the champions led 50-26. Hibs then played in spurts in the final quarter, as Doreen Parnis had a good scoring spell, but Leanne Sciberras made a good reply for Sliema.
