As an avid sports lover and especially of basketball, I seem to find it hard to understand why so few youths practice this game and so few people turn up to support a team especially as the entertainment level is always high due to the velocity of the game. I believe that an effort through the Ministry of Education and the MBA with local councils
can help icrease participation through a concentrated effort in schools and local areas where if facilities for training are provided with proper coaching and promotion I am sure a following similar to that of youth football will develop as all kids would be able to train without depending on their parents as taxi drivers as most clubs are usually quite far away from home! I feel that especially in the female sector there are a lot of young girls who are not into sport and if they are offered the opportunity through their school the interest will explode. A very important issue would be to have good coaches in schools with a schools inter league introduced so the competitive aspect will be introduced which will make the whole matter more fun. How about also the Education dept. recognising the importance of sport in the development of our youth and awarding special points to those who take it seriously - which will also give the students an advantage when they come to sit for their matsec - this may entice parents into accepting their childrens participation in sports. Anyhow, I hope that this contribution will get some feedback and a forum to discuss may lead to some solid development as I would really love to see the basketball family grow. |
