BOV K.O. 2 Div. men Final
Loyola Xuereb Installations 67 Mosta 73
(19-21)(14-21)(19-11)(15-20)
After Mellieha's victory in the MBA Shield, it was time for another honour in this category, and the two finalists regaled the spectators present with a full-blooded match, which could have gone either way, but which finally went Mosta's way, thanks to their better staying power.
There was also Ray Muscat's bagful of points, as Loyola afforded him too much room for most of the match.. Loyola could have ended the game better, but their potential match winner, Joe Vella, was sadly left on the bench in the crucial last minutes of the match.
Mosta won this honour for the first time, after three failed attempts, in 2001, 2002 and 2005. For Loyola it was heartbreak again, after their loss, last season, to Qormi
The game had a very lively start. It was Loyola who raced into a 6-0 lead, with Joe Vella grabbing points. Mosta replied through Steve Gouder, who returned from abroad, but Vella then sank a trey for Loyola.
After that there were more treys at both ends, as Ray Muscat put in two for Mosta, and Clayton Agius replied for Loyola. Jonathan Ransley put Loyola ahead, with two hoops, but Mosta ended the session in front, despite a late Joe Vella trey for Loyola.
In the second quarter Clint Grixti went on court for Loyola, and his points brought his side to a point down, at 23-24. Sassoun Saakian concluded two fast breaks, and Mosta were on their way again. A 10-1 run gave them the game's first good lead. Patrick Lentini's points, including a trey, made it a closer game for Loyola.
Muscat sank the next two treys for Mosta, and they put distance from their opponents, on a 42-33 score at the interval. After the break Loyola came out determined to wipe out their deficit. This they did, after some steady pressing, as Ray Muscat was shut out.
After drawing level at 47-47, it was Saakian who made a couple of hoops, to put Mosta ahead again. Lyola came right back, with Vella's third trey.
The lead changed hands twice, and Clayyton agius' failed free shots, with time lapsed, saw Mosta keep their slim 53-52 lead, after three sessions.
In the final quarter Loyola replied on three occasions to Mosta's baskets, and then Vella turned up again, and his fourth trey, and subsequent points, gave his side a 64-58 lead. Mosta reacted hotly, and Muscat's next two treys, in a 12-0 run, gave them back the lead, as players were being fouled out at both ends.
With time beginning to run out Trevor Grech's trey opened the game again for Loyola, but Mosta held out till the end, to clinch the match, and win the season's second honour.
After the match Michael Galea, Marketing Manager for BOV, presented trophies to both teams, as Mosta celebrated their first time win in the K.O.

Depiro 44 Bupa Luxol 91
(8-19)(13-18)(9-23)(14-31)
Luxol now have made sure of a place in the championship pool, after brushing aside Depiro, the same team who had surprised them in the previous round of play. The top three teams are out in front, and the bottom three now look towards the relegation pool, in the next phase.
Depiro had David Agius abroad, after his fantastic game against Siggiewi, and Antoine Costa was out injured. Luxol were without Edgar Caruana Montaldo.
The Violets had a good start, with Alan Borg already two treys to the good, just after a minute's play. Luxol then went on a 12-2 lead. Depiro's recovery was hampered by Jide Jetson, who put in two hoops from the paint.
When Depiro finally got going there was Chris Sammut with another trey for Luxol, as they ground out a good first session lead. In the second quarter Luxol were still pressing their adversaries, and they increased their lead at the start, and Robert Azzopardi was putting in his hoops. When Depiro's speed began to trouble Luxol, Azzopardi sank a trey, for a 31-15 lead.
Depiro managed some more poimts till the end of the session, but Chris Sammut was feeding his team well, and Luxol finished 37-21 ahead at the interval. After the break there was no let-up for Depiro.
An 8-0 Luxol run was snapped by an Andrew Aquilina trey. Luxol went on grabbing hoops and free shots, as Jide Jetson was master in the opposing zone. A 10-2 run in the closing stages of the third session pushed the Violets further ahead, for a 60-30 reassuring score.
The last session was more open, given the score. Luxol were still in control of the situation, but Depiro could have more of the game. Luxol's treys started again, as Steve Schembri, Robert Azopardi and two more from Alan Borg, gave Luxol supremacy, after a balanced opening to this final quarter.
At the end of the match Reuben Dalli sealed Luxol's performance with his trey.

Siggiewi Smina 72 Qormi Kia 30
(17-13)(17-9)(20-4)(18-4)
Siggiewi went back on level terms with Sliema, at the top of the standings, although in second place on direct encounters. Qormi proved a tough nut to crack at first, but Siggiewi's overall strength came through in the second part of the match, and they could involve nearly all of the players, as they strolled htrough to their third successive win over Qormi.
Siggiewi recovered JP Bonnici, from his sojourn abroad, and Albert Spiteri made an appearance, but only on the bench. Anthony Huizre's place was taken by Steve Sammut. Qormi, fresh from their victory over Floriana, were in their standard formation. Right at the start Antoine Grech put in a trey for Qormi, but Siggiewi came right out and made an 8-0 run. Qormi were undaunted, and tied the score twice. Siggiewi turned to long distance shooting, and David Camilleri came off the bench to sink in a couple of treys. Qormi could only reply through free throws, as Siggiewi held on to their advantage. In the second quarter Siggiewi tried to put distance between the two teams early on, and JP Azzopardi made his trey, but Wayne Grixti did likewise for Qormi, at the other end. Qormi were still holding on midway through the session, at 22-27. Louis Camilleri then made points for Siggiewi, as they finished the quarter on a 7-0 run, to edge away on a 34-22 lead at the interval. After the break things went better for Siggiewi, playing with more confidence. After suffering an early hoop, Siggiewi then went on a 13-0 run, finding each other with ease, and pulling clear. Qormi could only add a further hoop, as Siggiewi defended stoutly, and also added another 7-0 run. After three sessions they had their minds at rest, on a 54-26 scoreline. The last session served for open play and try outs. Siggiewi showed their mastery, but not so much in points made, as they continued to increase their lead. With the result in no doubt Qormi found space for their young bench players to get a piece of the action. The scoring went down, and Qormi couldn't improve much on their tally. John Doughty closed down the match for Siggiewi, with his trey. SIGGIEWI: A. Spiteri, 12 L. Camilleri, 10 D. Camilleri, 5 J. Doughty, 6 A. Portelli, 10 JP Azzopardi, 3 P. Shoults, 4 JP Bonnici, 13 A. There were moments when lackadaisical play by Sliema permitted the Greens to go close, but when Sliema stepped up their pace they could always go clear. The match was highlighted with a grand Roderick Mifsud dunk in full flight, in the last session. Sliema had their injured players, Michael Naudi and Adrian Micallef. Floriana had Robert Spiteri back, after missing some games. Noel Abela's three point play started the game for Floriana, but Sliema went 6-3 in front, with a number of free throws. Floriana didn't recover, and Sliema put in a good 12-0 run, with an Omar Said trey. The Greens managed some points near the end of the session, but Sliema were ouit in front, on a double figure lead. In the second session Sliema started putting in their young bench players. The Blues made a 7-2 run, but Floriana responded well, with a couple of treys, by Don Ross and Noel Falzon. Sliema were stung into action, and an8-2 run, with treys by Omar Said and Julian Galea, restored their lead, on a 34-17 score. Till the end of the quarter Sliema were slack in their play, and Gareth Gilson went behind the defence to put in three hoops in a row for Floriana. At the interval Sliema were leading 36-25. After the break Sliema took the game in hand again, and a 9-2 run, with Silvio Cassar working well in the paint. Karl Borg sank a trey for Floriana, and then the Greens hit Sliema hard, with a 10-0 run, starting with another Borg trey, for a 40-47 score. Sliema reacted at last, and a 10-1 run with treys by Kristin Baldacchino and again by Omar Said. Then just like the previous session, Floriana had a good ending, with another three hoops, for a closer 57-47 score. In the last quarter the Blues began with a Baldacchino trey, and he added on more points. Floriana tried to keep in touch, but they were still being hit, and a 9-0 run pushed Sliema further in front. Floriana's retaliation brought them scant consolation, as Sliema's bench players, all on court, proceeded to pile up the points in a good ending, including a Jonathan Zammit trey, for a satisfying final score. They made short shrift of their opponents, as the tandem, Beverlee Zammit and Lucienne Bezzina, had a field day, piling hoops and treys at will. Luxol were never in the game, and they had no answer to the Paolites' all-round play. Luxol now resign themselves to the classification pool. in the next phase. Luxol started on personal marking, but the champions still opened up with an 11-4 run. Both sides then sank treys, Kirsten Micallef for Luxol and Beverlee Zammit immediately after, for Hibs. Luxol were caught on fast breaks, as Lucienne Bezzina went on a scoring spree, ina 10-0 run. The Violets recovered a little at the end, but Hibs were in command. In the second quarter the Paolites began with treys by Bev Zammit and Bezzina. Soon after another Hibs 10-1 run, with a third Zammit trey, carried them way ahead of their opponents. Luxol's reply came late in the session, with a Psaila Savona trey, but they couldn't decrease their deficit, and at the interval the champions were fully 47-21 in front. After the break Luxol were hit harder yet, as Hibs, with bench players coming on court, were still too strong, and with Zammit and Bezzina putting in their treys, the gap between the two teams grew to alarming proportions. Luxol were agian limited to a few points, but Hibs were romping in with a 79-30 score, after three sessions. In the final quarter HIbs rested their established players, and Luxol began on a good note. Before taking her place on the bench Zammit found time to sink in her sixth trey. The match then petered tamely out, with Hibs marking their third win over Luxol, although their only blemish this season came early on against the same Violets. LUXOL: 10 Lara Chetcuti HIBS: 35 Beverlee Zammit, 27 Lucienne Bezzina, 12 Maria Desira REFEREES: Jean Paul Sammut, Alfreed Carbonaro SN Suns JC 26 Sliema Wanderers 65 (8-7)(10-25)(4-17)(4-16) Sliema took the opportunity to claim their second league win, which was their double over Suns. Sliema made sure of evading the bottom rung in the standings. Suns could feel justified in winning the first quarter, but Sliema were better through the whole match, and had Leanne Sciberras confirming her present, favourable form. It was actually Sliema who had the better start, going into a 6-2 lead, but Suns replied well, and points by Petra Zammit and Diane Falzon ensured them a slim first-session lead, despite Sciberras' hoops for Sliema. The match turned in the second quarter, as Sliema put in a 10-2 opening run, to forge ahead. Suns tried to get back but, besides Sciberras' points, there was Francesca Farrugia to boost Sliema's tally, as the Blues went clear of their opponents. At the interval the score had gone up to 32-18. After the break Suns seemed to make a recovery, as they replied quickly to Sliema's opening hoop, with two of their own, but this was about it for Suns. Sliema went on a long 15-0 run, which lasted till the end of the quarter, as Suns were left completely behind, on a 49-22 score, after three sessions. The last quarter was pretty much the same, with Sliema dominating the match, and extending their lead with ease. It was only Diane Falzon who provided the opposition, with her hoops. In the last seconds of play Michela Loporto sank the only trey of the game, for Sliema. It was a hard-fought match, and Kerygma must feel themselves unlucky, after having led for so long in the game. The experienced players dominated the scene, with Josette Calleja piling in the points, including treys, for Kerygma, and Sandra Schembri Wismayer being the focal point for Loyola, as they finally clinched their win, in difficult circumstances. The match started on a quiet note, and after taking the first lead, and then falling behind, it was Kerygma who were making the play. A 7-0 run, beginning with a Josette Calleja trey, gave them an advantage, which they kept till the end of the quarter, as Loyola were still disjointed in their play. In the second session the match began to gather momentum. Ann Camilleri sank a trey for Loyola, who then tied at 14-14. Kerygma went ahead again, with a second Calleja trey. Loyola tried to get back, but were hit again, this time with an Annabel Busuttil trey. Loyola finally recovered with Schembri Wismayer free shots, but Lerygma held out, and at the halfway stage they were 29-21 in front. After the break Loyola put in a spurt at the start. A 9-0 run, with points by Denise Hollier and Schembri Wismayer, put them ahead. Josette Calleja then took the game in hand for Kerygma, and netted all her side's points in this quarter. Kerygma regained the lead, and once more ended the session in front, on a 39-33 score. In the last session Loyola showed more determination, and Schembri Wismayer led her team to an opening 9-2 run, to just forge ahead, at 42-41. Elaine Cutajar made a three-point play for Kerygma, but Loyola went ahead again. Calleja sank her third trey for Kerygma, but Loyola had Schembri Wismayer to pull them through, denying Kerygma till the end, and ending their two-game winning spell.
